Isay Weinfeld, internationally renowned architect, tell us about how your projects come about.
I always try to do what I enjoy, what makes me happy. I accept a project only when I am certain its development will be a pleasurable experience or when I feel I can contribute on a personal level.
Your portfolio of projects goes well beyond Brazil, your country of origin. Does design change with geographical location?
I believe that design in Brazil, in the USA or in France means exactly the same thing as long as you have respect for the site in question. Once there is respect, there are no differences whatsoever.
What are you inspired by when you design? Do you have a signature style?
I don’t have a signature style really. I don’t like to be tied to any styles and I shy away from labels. I like to be free and choose shapes, forms and materials according to the project, the client and the site.
What did you think when FPMC invited you to compete for Petite Afrique?
It was a true honour for me to participate in the competition. I am not the type of architect who Imposes his own vision. I like to involve all the parties in order to find the best solution.
That is a rather unusual approach for an architect…
It is part of my character. I don’t design buildings that shout out and ask for attention, I prefer timeless designs, and forms which blend harmoniously into the landscape.
